Maintaining Your Sports Floor in Qatar's Climate

The Qatar Climate Challenge

Qatar's climate presents unique challenges for sports flooring maintenance. With summer temperatures exceeding 45°C, humidity levels reaching 90%, and frequent sandstorms, your sports floor needs a maintenance strategy tailored to these conditions. A generic European or North American maintenance plan will under-protect your investment.

Daily Maintenance

Indoor Floors (Hardwood, PU, Vinyl)

  • Dry mop the entire surface to remove dust and sand particles
  • Check entry points — sand tracked in is the #1 enemy of indoor sports floors
  • Monitor HVAC — maintain temperature between 18–25°C and humidity at 35–50%
  • Spot clean any spills immediately to prevent staining

Outdoor Surfaces (Acrylic, Turf, EPDM)

  • Sweep to remove sand accumulation
  • Check drainage channels for blockages
  • Inspect for heat-related surface changes
  • Water turf lightly (if permitted by local rules) before heavy-use sessions in summer — reduces surface temp and protects infill

Weekly Maintenance

Indoor

  • Wet mop with manufacturer-approved cleaning solution
  • Never use household cleaners, bleach, or ammonia-based products
  • Check for scratches, dents, or surface wear
  • Inspect expansion joints and perimeter seals

Outdoor

  • Pressure rinse (low pressure) to remove embedded dust
  • Artificial turf: Brush fibres to maintain upright position
  • Check for UV-related colour changes or surface cracking
  • Acrylic courts: Inspect line paint for chipping at baseline / service line (high-wear areas)

Monthly Maintenance

  • Machine scrub indoor floors with auto-scrubber
  • Inspect line markings for wear
  • Check subfloor moisture levels (hardwood floors — target reading <8% MC on surface probe)
  • Artificial turf: Check infill levels and top up if needed
  • EPDM tracks: Inspect for delamination or bubbling, especially at drainage fall points

Seasonal Deep Maintenance

Pre-Summer (April–May)

  • Professional deep clean all surfaces
  • UV protection treatment for outdoor surfaces
  • HVAC servicing to ensure consistent indoor climate
  • Infill top-up for artificial turf (heat causes compaction)

Post-Summer (October–November)

  • Full inspection for heat damage
  • Resurface worn areas
  • Recalibrate humidity control for cooler months
  • Deep clean and sanitise all indoor surfaces
  • Re-measure hardwood board width — boards cup slightly during summer; October is when you catch it

Common Qatar-Specific Issues

Sand Ingress — the #1 threat

Sand is the biggest threat to indoor sports floors in Qatar. Prevention strategies:
  • Install heavy-duty entrance mats (minimum 3 metres long — yes, really)
  • Implement a no-outdoor-shoes policy in sports halls
  • Use air curtains at main entrances
  • Increase cleaning frequency during sandstorm season (February–May)
A 3 m entrance mat captures 80% of tracked-in sand. Without it, sand reaches the centre of your hall within a week and grinds the finish off hardwood like slow sandpaper.

Humidity Damage

Excessive humidity can cause hardwood floors to expand, cup, or buckle:
  • Maintain HVAC 24/7 — even when the facility is closed
  • Install vapour barriers during construction
  • Use hygrometers (placed at floor level, not wall level) to monitor moisture
  • Keep humidity between 35–50% year-round
If HVAC must be turned off (holiday periods, budget constraints), at minimum keep dehumidifiers running. A three-week HVAC shutdown in a Qatar summer typically costs more in floor damage than the HVAC electricity saved.

UV Degradation

Outdoor surfaces degrade faster under Qatar's intense UV:
  • Choose UV-stabilised materials from the start
  • Apply UV protective coatings annually
  • Consider shade structures for high-use areas
  • Plan for earlier replacement cycles (10–20% shorter than European standards)

Sandstorm Protocol

When a sandstorm is forecast:

  • Close all sports hall doors and windows at least 2 hours before
  • Stop all outdoor play
  • Cover turf goals and nets
  • Run HVAC in recirculate (not fresh-air) mode
  • After the storm passes:

  • Wait for sand to settle (usually 2–4 hours)
  • Dry sweep outdoor surfaces BEFORE wet cleaning — wet sand behaves like grinding paste
  • Rinse outdoor courts low-pressure
  • Dry mop indoor halls, then wet mop
  • Inspect drainage channels — sandstorms clog them in minutes
  • Qatar averages 4–6 significant sandstorms per year. A prepared facility loses a day; an unprepared one loses a floor.

    Ramadan Operations Considerations

During Ramadan, many Qatar facilities shift operations to evening / night hours. This changes the maintenance calendar:

    • HVAC loading is different (cooler nights allow slight setpoint relaxation)
    • Sports halls may be in continuous use from 21:00–02:00 — more floor wear per week
    • Deep-clean windows shift to daytime (when facility is empty)
    • Plan any major resurfacing work for mid-Ramadan afternoons
Communicate maintenance schedule to facility users in advance — maintenance surprises during Ramadan generate more complaints than at any other time of year.

    Annual Maintenance Calendar for Qatar

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How often should a hardwood court be resanded in Qatar? Every 7–10 years under normal use, every 5–7 years under heavy school / competition use. Never skip — worn finish lets humidity penetrate the boards.

Q: What cleaner should I use on a PU sports floor? Neutral pH (6–8), non-ammonia, non-waxing. Follow the manufacturer's specific product. Using the wrong cleaner is a warranty-voiding event on most PU floors.

Q: Is it OK to use an auto-scrubber on vinyl sports flooring? Yes, with soft pads (red or white). Never use stripping pads or solvent-based cleaners.

Q: How do I tell if my outdoor acrylic court needs recoating? Visual: baseline lines showing through the base coat. Physical: surface feels rougher, ball skids more. Typical recoat cycle in Qatar: 4–6 years.

Q: My artificial turf is flat and hard in patches — is it ruined? Not necessarily. It's usually compacted infill. Power brush + infill top-up fixes it. If the carpet fibre is split or matted, that's different — needs closer inspection.
